In honor of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month, our Wearable of the Month this October goes to Owlet: a tiny, wearable baby bootie designed to alert parents if their baby stops breathing.
While Owlet does not claim to prevent SIDS (or any other medical condition) that might befall infants, it alerts parents know if their baby stops breathing or has any sudden changes in their oxygen levels. This baby monitor was developed with the idea to help parents of newborns get a better night’s sleep – without the fear of having to stay awake in order to constantly check the baby.
Owlet uses pulse oximetry, the same technology that is used for infants in hospitals, to monitor the baby’s oxygen levels. A small light shines through the skin, estimating the amount of blood flow and oxygen levels based on the amount of light transmitted to the sensor. This information is then transmitted to an accompanying smartphone app, so parents can monitor their baby’s heart rate and oxygen levels – even alerting parents if the baby stops breathing.
There are approximately 3,500 cases each of Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID) in the US each year. This can be either due to SIDS or accidental strangulation (usually while sleeping). While Owlet does not officially guarantee the safety of one’s baby, it’s no wonder that new parents would want some kind of wearable that can monitor the baby’s heart rate and oxygen levels.
So congratulations to Owlet Baby Monitor for being October’s Wearable of the Month!
